Menswear 2019: Our Favorite Summer Trends & Fall Fashion Predictions

Fashion can sometimes feel fleeting. As soon as you’ve mastered your look, there’s a new trend that hits the scene. Our founders took some time to weigh in on fall trends, the fashion industry, and how to stay true to your style while trying out new looks.

  Don Davenport

What’s your favorite fashion trend of 2019 so far?

Certainly it’s been the “Utilitarian” look. Everything from all the various cargo pants, vests, and misplaced pockets have continued to catch my eye across the board. I love the way people have owned the look while putting their own spin on it to fit their style.

What fall fashion trends would you like to see this year?

This fall I wouldn’t mind seeing the relaxed fit trend make a resurgence similar to the way Pharrell’s style was back in the early 2000s when I was listening to N.E.R.D heavy and rocking Billionaire Boys Club letterman jackets.

What is the men’s fashion industry missing in your opinion?

I’ve strongly expressed to close friends how I’ve felt that individuality has been missing for quite some time now. Recently, I’ve felt that people have dressed so much alike that it comes off as a uniform, especially with some of the hypebeast styles you have seen in 2019. Over the summer I feel like I’ve seen that individuality start to come back and I’ve seen pioneers such as Nick Young lead the way with the confidence and imagination that it takes to stand out amongst any crowd no matter the venue.

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is very mood driven. Depending on my mood you may see me with a thick chain around my neck with some red sunglasses and vintage T-shirt, the next day I could be in a Cuban shirt buttoned down halfway with a nice pair of cropped pants and classic vans. Ultimately, my style is all over the place but very much driven by my mood.

Which BOH item is your favorite right now?

My favorite BOH item would have to be the “Guilty Pleasures” T-shirt by Rip N Repair. I like simple designed t-shirts with bold statements on them, I always have.

What’s your “uniform” or signature look?

My signature look is typically a mix of  bold and classic. Classic pair of shoes with bold accessories complimented by some sort of shirt that gives a clear definition of my current mood/vibe.

What’s the key to putting together a solid fashionable look?

I believe the key to a solid fashionable look is comfort, confidence, and imagination. My imagination is what brings the look together for me but I don’t believe that one has to sacrifice comfort in order to be fashionable. The last touch to the outfit is wearing it with confidence;  because confidence will always be your strongest accessory no matter what you wear.

Kevin James

What’s your favorite fashion trend of 2019 so far?

This summer’s “short short” with the not too high sock. From Larry Bird and Magic Johnson waging an epic battle for supremacy in the 80’s to Kevin Kline in “The Big Chill” ; it’s pretty cool seeing the era repeat itself in fashion. It’s a cleaner, more confident time in men’s fashion. After all, I was born in the 80’s .

What fall fashion trends would you like to see this year?

I’ve always been a fan of classic wardrobe staples re-imagined. This Fall, I would like to see a more forward approach to the men’s cable knit sweater. Maybe a box fit, loose the band at the bottom, and exaggerate the knit. PJ Tucker sported one from Ovadia & Sons last season that I found pretty cool.

What is the men’s fashion industry missing in your opinion?

I think the industry is missing long-term innovation. With the power of social media, trends saturate as quickly as they manifest. Think of the chest-rigger, it was in and out in a matter of 4 months. So now, season looks become very cookie cut around peak season. So I think we are missing the innovation of a completely new idea/approach. Although a lot of guys are afraid of it, I think Odell Beckham did a good job of this with the Kilt at the Met Gala. We need more of that confidence.

How would you describe your personal style?

I’ll admit, my personal style for the most part is on-the-go, and very mood driven. My go-to is definitely suburban dad-style with a streetwear approach, tailored leisurewear. Just look at vintage advertisements based in LA, that’s the inspo for me.

Which BOH item is your favorite right now?

My favorite BOH item right now is the Signature Back of House tee. Minimal design, but full of meaning. Growing a brand from scratch brings a lot of new meaning. In our case, camaraderie and family. So this item means a lot to me.

What’s your “uniform” or signature look?

My signature look is very classic. Solid tennis shoe, boxed tee or sweater, ball cap, and a nice pair of denim. I put most of my effort in denim. Well-worn for aged characteristic, and tailored at the bottom.

What’s the key to putting together a solid fashionable look?

The key to putting together a solid fashionable look is individuality and confidence. Confidence is the biggest. No matter how on trend the look is, if the individual lacks confidence, it shows. The key is to be yourself.

 Jonathan Mason

What’s your favorite fashion trend of 2019 so far?

I am huge on the intersection of form and function. I think the shift to functional clothes gets me excited. I found a new pocket on one of my utility vests. That’s like Christmas for someone that loses as many things as I do.

What fall fashion trends would you like to see this year?

Internationally I want to see minimalism keep pushing strong. I’m a tech CEO at heart. I like uniforms. Locally, I want to see a revival or potentially BOH Collaboration with the local street wear we grew up on Shooters, All Daz, Bonadacci, Solbiato, etc. I am personally going to try to work with Aja Imani to DIY some Dior Kicks.

What is the men’s fashion industry missing in your opinion?

Individuality.

How would you describe your personal style?

My style is a mix of designer, international, local, minimalism and uniformity. I like to express myself, but I also am an HBS student—-I love frameworks. My style varies, but if you just look at the basic formula—it’s just my Jobsian Black Shirt and Dad jeans. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Which BOH item is your favorite right now?

Black Utility Vest. It’s the denim jacket of the summer. And I find new pocket everyday so it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

What’s your “uniform” or signature look?

BOH Shirt.
Jeans, Army Pants, or Shorts
Designer Shoes or Vans
Utility Vest
H Bracelet
Dog Chain

What’s the key to putting together a solid fashionable look?

Confidence. I’ve literally walked out the house with one leg on my pants up at school. I just owned it and got more “Dude the 90s are so in” and “So fly my guy”’s than I had ever gotten. So just be you. Be Bold. And Own It. Or just buy all BOH and we got you.

Rodney Mcleod

What’s your favorite fashion trend of 2019 so far?

My favorite trend so far of 2019 is the evolution of the track pant. The pant has so much versatility, while the cropped fit allows you to showcase your choice of socks.

What fall fashion trends would you like to see this year?

A fashion trend I hope to see this fall is more uniform utilitarian styles evolve and grow even further than where it is now. So I would love to see more jacket, and pant uniform sets to wear with a nice military boot. While the style is minimal it makes a statement.

What is the men’s fashion industry missing in your opinion?

Brands continue to miss on a huge market. Men who are above the average size, I would love to see a notable brand make a collection targeting this demographic.

How would you describe your personal style?

My style is a mix of different flavors, I hate limiting myself to one sense of style, love keeping people off balance & eager to peep my next fit. My closet consists of notable streetwear brands, cozy, chic, edgy and vintage. Nowadays, when I get dressed I care about two things comfort & style. So a track pant, t shirt, and pair of Nikes is fine with me. The key is confidence, and placement.

Which BOH item is your favorite right now?

My favorite BOH item has to be our Metro collection. It is ours, we own it, and lived it. The metro symbolizes the place I call “Home”. It references so many memories I had as a child growing up. So I wear each shirt with pride. Not to mention the shirts are dope.

What’s your “uniform” or signature look?

Graphic T shirt tucked into a pair of pants/trousers preferably with a nice pair of kicks and a few accessories to dress it up.

What’s the key to putting together a solid fashionable look?

Confidence is the key to fashion, and ownership. You must own every look and style you put together. Fashion has no rules, so embrace your own sense of style and own it.
